Teh Hong Piow

A Banking ThoroughBred

Tan Sri Dato' Dr. Teh Hong Piow, Founder and Chairman of Public Bank was born, according to the Chinese Lunar Calendar with its 12-year cycle of animal symbols- in the Year of the Horse. He was prove a veritable throughbred.

The term " thoroughbred" is reserved for the noblest of the species - a horse of outstanding quality - commanding speed and strength. In racing terms, the most prize-winning and the most prized. Tan Sri Teh by consistently outperforming his peers, is the most decorated, most award-winning banker of his time - now the doyen of his profession - the Banking Grand Master.

In Chinese mythology one's birth sign determines one's personal chemistry and life's path. The elements attributed to the horse that include courage - dynamism - agility. All present and correct in the subject of this book. The horse is packed with energy. Tan Sri Teh is said to be possessed - in modern terms - with "limitless horsepower".

But to qualify as a thoroughbred the above qualities have to be present in heroic proportions. Famous horses which populate legend and history are all associated with heroic deeds. We think of Pegasus of the winged variety that attempted to mount heaven. Or the Trojan Horse, a wooded version and a most ingenious strategy to enter and conquer Troy. St. George who slew the dragon is always depicted on horseback. As is Alexander the Great who rode to victory on his famous charger, Bucephalus. Napolean rode his white stallion, Marengo, at Waterloo.

Tan Sri Teh Hong Piow would appear to have more than fufilled his astrological destiny.

The present work documents 40 years of Public Bank's spiralling success and the serial achievements of the man behind it - an outstanding practitioner in Malaysia's corporate annals and in banking.

Afer recording such a remarkable story of one shuch a remarkable man, born in the Year of the Horse who outperforms his peers, Tan Sri Dato' Sri Dr. Teh Hong Piow is indeed the well deserved sobriquet of

A Banking Thoroughbred.
